LaCie d2 Quadra 500GB External Hard Drive 301825U July 11, 2008 Sandeep Mathur (Philadelphia, PA) This drive is extermely reliable and fast. Have been using daily for about 6 months and no isses to date. Has multiple options for connection (USB, Firewire, eSATA) and even includes the necessary cables, which makes it ideal for future compatability. Set up was easy (plus and play) and instructions were straightfoward. Software is adequate for simple backup of drive/files. No sound (as there is no fan). Drive never get hot even under constant use (ie video playback, etc). Lacie's technical service does leave something to be desired however. Had a few basic questions not related to any functional problems, and they couldn't answer. Would definetly recommend for someone looking for reliable and solid external drive at a good price.
easier to set up than instructions suggest July 9, 2008 John Urquhart (Hampton, VA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The drive is new so I cannot say anything about its reliability, yet. It was very easy to set up for Windows: automatic format; two partitions that can be adjusted easily.
However the instructions made it appear that the whole process would be much more difficult, claiming that the drive was formatted for the Mac and would have to be reformatted for windows and partitioned using XP disk manager and all software on drive would be lost.
Instead installation was extremely simple!
Excellent Out of the Box July 7, 2008 Tomas Sancio (Baruta, Venezuela) The LaCie Quadra 500 GB drive does what you expect from a hard drive with multiple ports, looks good on your desk, makes little noise and contains all the necessary cables to plug into your Mac or PC. I didn't use the included backup software since I worked with Mac OSX 10.5 Time Machine but it's great that they include free software for backing up your data. Excellent product so far.
Great Hard Drive July 5, 2008 hdcspike (Little Rock, AR) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I really like this drive. It's very well made and looks and feels like a lot of thought went into it's manufacture. It's very quite, and I really like the on/auto/off switch on the back. I use it to just backup files and leave it off when I'm not backing up files. It's a true plug and play....just follow the directions. I'm running Windows XP for home, and the drive mounted right away. I told the LaCie software what OS I was running and it configured the drive for one partition in NTFS for me. Only took a couple of minutes. I used the software that came with it to back up my files, and this is where it went south and the reason why I didn't give it 5 stars. First I would have prefered to format the drive into 2 partitions, but the LaCie doesn't give you that option, so I will use Windows to do it instead. The software allowed me to back up all my user docs with no problem, but that was it. Everything else is manual. Plus, the software imbedded itself in my startup scripts, and would cause the computer to halt when it booted becuase I had the drive turned off. Overall I would recommend this drive. It's costs a little extra, but except for the software, I believe it's worth it.
Excellent Product June 30, 2008 YugYug (Rockaway Park, NY United States) The LaCie d2 Quadra 500 GB has been doing the job I want since I purchased it 6 weeks ago. I'm running Leopard. Storing all my scanned photos. Highly recommended for the price.
