Amazon.com Product Description For the person who needs access to their digital content away from home, at work, or online, while also allowing that same content to be shared in a secure setting, look no further than the Seagate Free Agent Pro Portable Hard Drive. This powerful portable hard drive delivers high-speed transfers, while also giving you the ability to share content with others safely and securely from a remote location or even online.
Powerful storage device with a sleek new design. |
This hip-looking hard drive takes up less room on your desk than an ordinary stapler. |
Share your content with others safely and securely. | With up to 1 Terabyte and an ultra-slim design for a clutter-free desktop, your FreeAgent Pro external hard drive helps keep you safe from goof-ups by automatically saving new versions of your content that you can easily access if need be. And should something happen to your PC, you can roll back your Windows operating system, settings, and applications to a point in time when they ran smoother, like before a virus attack. Even though the system settings are taken back in time, updates to photos, music and critical data files are kept current. The Free Agent Pro is also ideal for those who want quick and painless transfers of their data from their computer to their drive, and from their drive to online accounts (such as Shutterfly or email). Simply plug it in to any power source and connect the USB cable to any computer, and you're ready to go. This hip-looking hard drive takes up less room on your desk than an ordinary stapler--1 x 3 x 5.2 inches (H x D x W)-- giving you more space for your other desktop items. Meanwhile, the hard drive only measures 7.5 x 1.4 x 6.3-inches (H x D x W) and it matches its small base. High Speed Synchronization and Sharing The Free Agent Pro data mover automatically duplicates and moves selected content from your hard drive to multiple locations, such as copying your contact lists and emails to your iPod, or photos to a Shutterfly account. This feature also allows you to move your entire 'My Documents' folder to the Free Agent, or move it to your own online space where you (or others you choose) can access it from any browser 24/7. The Free Agent software also offers the feature of rolling back your system to better time if something should happen to your PC while automatic revisions of your content help keep you safe from goof-ups. Move files or other content with either USB 2.0, eSATA, or FireWire 400 allowing a maximum transfer rate of 480Mb/sec for USB, and 3Gb/sec for eSATA, while delivering a high performance spindle speed of 7,200 RPM. The unit also comes with a sophisticated touch point power on/off switch. The Free Agent Pro software and drive formatting works only with Windows, but the drive can easily be reformatted for a Mac with OS X's Disk Utility. This portable hard drive is also compatible with Windows Vista (as well as Windows XP and Windows 2000), allowing you to backup your content regardless of operating system upgrades. A five-year warranty is also included, giving you complete peace of mind. Now with the ability to take your data with you anywhere you go, your digital content finally has room to breathe. What's in the Box FreeAgent Pro data mover drive, Free Agent software (preloaded) and electronic documentation, USB2.0/eSATA/FireWire 400 interfaces, USB 2.0 cable, FireWire cable, AC power adapter, and a quick start guide.
Product Description Ideal for accessing your content from anywhere, sharing it with anyone, and syncing it to almost anything, FreeAgent Pro allows you to automatically move your content to multiple locations, share your pictures online and automatically update without even thinking about it, and many more.

Seagate ain't what it used to be July 18, 2008 Gadgeteer (Pacific Palisades, CA USA) As an owner of an older Seagate drive as well as a now failed still older Maxtor drive I was surprisingly and deeply disappointed with my experience with this new Seagate drive. There is an unmistakable deterioration in the quality of this drive as compared to these older drives. The older drives have a real on-off power switch that actually functions and built-in sleep modes that work.
My new Seagate FreeAgent Pro has an apparently pressure actuated power switch(when it actually worked, which was almost never in my case)on the base electronics module. Without an operable power on-off switching capability, the only option to turn the unit on and off is to actually pull the power cable from the base plate, which is unacceptably inconvenient. This might have been marginally acceptable if the sleep function had actually worked, which it almost never did. The sleep function would work properly only from a cold start, but when the base unit warmed up (it was quite warm, almost hot, to the touch) the drive would resume its usual insomniac condition.
Based upon my experience with this drive, which I returned, I can only conclude that the currently available consumer type external hard drives are being designed for the lowest possible cost, taking shortcuts in the resultant quality. These new and lower priced drives do not exhibit the quality and reliability of drives sold two and more years ago.
I have decided, for my own purposes, that I am going to use a flash drive for currently important data and continue to use my three year old Seagate drive for periodic complete backups. I believe that as the future of storage technology continues to unfold, flash drives or their equivalent will take over a greater and greater share of this market. Hopefully, the hard drive manufacturers will improve their quality and reliability as well.
No module design has many issues July 17, 2008 Terry The first FreeAgent drive that I received from Amazon did not have the separate modules for USB and firewire. Instead, this was a new version from Seagate that had a mini USB, mini firewire, full size firewire, and a esata connector all on the back of the base. The drive also contained a software manual for both PC and Mac. On the older version there was no software for the Mac. Some people before complained that the power switch does not work. With no instructions from Seagate I found that only a light, quick touch was required to turn it on. To turn off, just hold your finger on the switch for about 3 seconds. Now for the bad news.
From the beginning this drive never worked right. On the PC side running XP and using the firewire connection, it wouldn't consistently wake up or go to sleep when the computer was turned on or off. Also, sometimes the drive would keep spinning even though the light turned off. The only way to stop the drive was to use the power switch to turn it on and then off again. My PC did not have a USB 2.0 so I was unable to test that connection.
On the Mac side, my aluminum iMac did not consistently see the drive using the USB connection. When using the firewire, the drive would wake and sleep with the computer but the light would never turn off. The only way to turn the light off was to install their software and have the light always stay off. The drawback of installing the software is that the drive will start to go to sleep after only 1 min. and you will need to use a PC to make it stay awake longer. There is a very long thread on the Seagate forum discussing this issue.
After about 3 weeks of putting up with the quirks of this drive, it started making loud noises. I sent this back to Amazon and the replacement I received was the older version that still used the screw in modules. After about 2 months this drive is still working fine on my iMac using firewire. It sleeps and wakes when it's supposed to and the light turns off when it goes to sleep. Finally, since I'm now using a iMac with time machine, the lack of backup software is no big deal.
Looks cool at first July 12, 2008 J. Merritt (Arizona) This item seemed to heat up fairly hot when I used it. I backed everything up to it, it comes with pretty good software. I hooked it up to a usb hub so I can control all these things at once. last night it began sticking and then started buzzing every five seconds. If you dont beleive me search on your google free agent buzzing. It seemed like it was incurable so I took it back. Seagate and Maxtor have always been run of the mill brands, I always trust western digital a bit more. DOnt know why. I got a mybook home. It is cool and easier to see when its working or not. Power button is clearly defined, unline the seagate. The seagat is also going to be top heavy on that wierd base it has. So You will have to place it in an area were it wont tip over.
I lost interest and looked to western digital. The software they both use is the same one, so you wont have any issues going from one to another.
Also Seagate had a bunch of uneeded software, the western digital had just what you needed, nothing more and nothing less. I liked that.
The western digital world edition i passed up because people said it sounded like a rocket ship. The western digital home one doesnt sound like its on at all, its easy to see when the drive is working and I dig on that!
Good luck, if you get stuck with the seagate problem, I told ya so!

Seagate Freeagent Pro 500 GB July 12, 2008 Elizabeth Cross (New York, NY) This was hard to install and did not work very well. I returned it for refund.
Quiet, Quiet, Quiet, Quiet, Quiet, Quiet, Quiet, June 27, 2008 John Schultz (Illinois) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was VERY pleased with this hard drive! It is virtually silent which was one of the most important considerations for me and the subdued orange glow was a nice change from the brilliant blue fad of recent years. I listen to my music at night from it so it had to be silent and dim. I had a OWC mercury elite that was supposed to be quiet but had a very high pitched whine that was quite annoying! Set up was a breeze! I use this on a Mac and after formatting it with Disk Utility I was good to go. I have not experienced any of the firewire sleep and wake issues that some of the other reviewers have mentioned. Great Great find! get it
