5 out of 5 stars Excellent device - just ordered our third one   July 27, 2008
John T. (Washington DC)
My wife and I each bought a 120GB Aegis 2.5" Portable Hard Drive (firewire) last year, and we couldn't be more pleased. The unit is convenient, fast, quiet, self-powered and entirely user friendly with our two Apple iBooks and iMac computer. Plug it in, and it pops up quickly, ready to be worked with like the internal hard drive. Click the disconnect, and it is almost immediately ready to be unplugged and put back in its soft case. Added bonuses are nice styling, a firewire extension cord (good for back of the computer connecting) and a very reasonable price. We're getting a third unit for the important job of backing up our large photo library.

1 out of 5 stars Take Care it is Firewire ONLY   May 2, 2008

I rated this one star to get your attention. I didn't read the info closely enough and after I received it I found our that this was not USB AND Firewire; just firewire. I wish it had been USB as well. It is a nice lightweight device that looks as if it would have been ideal for my purpose. I sent it back to Amazon and bought the Iomega 160GB which is a GREAT, cool running, and quiet drive.

1 out of 5 stars Freezes up like crazy   April 22, 2008

I purchased this hard drive about a year ago, and I hate it. When my powerbook goes to sleep, it freezes. I contacted the company and they said they were aware of the problem but could not fix it. Now, if I don't use the drive for 15 minutes, if freezes and I have to manually remove it from the computer to reset it. I do not recommend using this to backup important data as it is simply not reliable.

When our 60 gig internal drive died we realized that an external independent backup device is essential. We wanted a small, fast, reliable, lightweight portable hard drive that did not require an external electrical source as we don't always have access to an electrical outlet with our MacBook. Also we wanted a firewire device as we heard that sometimes the USB ports are underpowered. Liked the fact that the drive had its own self-contained cable & was both Mac & Pc compatible. The 3 year warranty was also important, as it shows the manufacturer's confidence in its product. The price we paid, $[...] (a further $[...] mfg. coupon was included from Amazon) made it the most price competitive. It came with 3 software programs that probably would have been quite useful except that our new MacBook (wouldn't you know our 3 year old, out of warranty, iBook's motherboard died) came with Apple proprietary backup software: TimeMachine that's easy to use & very fast. Have used the drive every night since receiving it & have had no problems.

5 out of 5 stars It is what it is   December 25, 2007

After storage space became tight, I upgraded from my three or four year old 60gb full size Firewire external backup.

Id consider myself a fairly advanced technology user and I usually don't purchase things out of hand. I took a leap in this case, having read nothing but positives about this product and so far I have to agree totally.

To the point, it is what it is. Sitting at near the size of a pack of playing cards (and as thin), the design is clean with a nice alcove to fit the Firewire cable. An excellent choice for laptop use and need for minimal clutter. It is pure function, just plug and play with the small blue LED to show operation. Arrives with several feet of additional Firewire mating cable for longer reach, a snug synthetic sleeve to keep the drive clean and dry, and utility software. I haven't used the software yet, keeping the drive in the home office, but it covers just about any need you could have (in some cases multi options for the same application).

A friend brought up the point that more bang for the buck would include a terabyte drive and comparable external shell. This is true and Id considered it but sometimes form, function, and convenience override storage capacity and the Aegis is good example of this.
